Belgian, unique & innovative
Sustainable, renewable products from biomass - that’s the mission of the Biowanze team. With our biobased products, we ensure that fossil carbons remain in the ground permanently. Because every day, people use countless products made from fossil raw materials such as crude oil, coal or natural gas. Almost all fuels are of fossil origin. With the use of fossil raw materials, carbon that has been stored in the soil for millions of years is released into the atmosphere as CO2. Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing, climate change is progressing. We want to do something against this, for today's and future generations!
In order to prevent the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere from rising further or to lower it, fossil carbon must remain in the earth and CO2 must be extracted from the ambient air. During their growth, plants absorb CO2. This is the most efficient and proven way to harness CO2 from the ambient air.
Sustainably produced ethanol as a gasoline substitute is an answer to the future challenges of climate-friendly energy supply, especially in the transportation sector. Our alcohol is also used in beverage production, cosmetics, pharmaceutical applications, for example as a basis for disinfectants, or as a starting material for innovative biochemicals. Equally important are the resulting protein food and animal feed products as well as biogenic carbon dioxide, which is used in beverage production, among other things. In this way, all raw material components are valued.
Circular economy & no-waste
Renewable raw materials are completely processed into valuable products in order to save resources and avoid waste.
Our ethanol plant is certified as sustainable. Our renewable ethanol reduces CO2 emissions across the entire value chain by up to 80% compared to fossil fuel (calculated from well to wheel).
Almost self-sufficiency in green energy thanks to biomass cogeneration power plants.
Partner of agriculture
As a member of the Südzucker Group, we have our roots in agriculture. We are reliable partners for our raw material suppliers and feed customers.
For a local raw material supply with belgian sugar beets and feed wheat, as well as a perfect connection via ship to the ARA zone (Antwerp - Rotterdam - Amsterdam).
We are constantly in the process of optimizing and developing our products and production processes. Thanks to the circular economy, exemplary energy efficiency or raw material flexibility, our model has various ecological and economic advantages.
Since 2008, Biowanze has played a central role as a member of the CropEnergies group. CropEnergies, an integral part of the Südzucker Group, is now a European leader in the sustainable production of renewable ethanol, primarily for the fuel sector.
Operating from four state-of-the-art production sites in Germany, Belgium, the UK and France, CropEnergies generates around 1.3 million cubic metres of renewable ethanol every year. But our impact on climate protection doesn't stop there. CropEnergies stands out for its processing of raw materials, generating more than one million tonnes of high-quality protein feed and animal feed every year. This versatility illustrates our commitment to a circular economy, where nothing is wasted and every local resource is optimised. What makes our facilities unique is our relentless pursuit of energy efficiency with the ultimate aim of achieving carbon neutrality.
At Biowanze, we have two boilers fuelled by certified, local and renewable biomass. These installations supply energy not only to our production site, but also to the neighbouring units of the SOL group and Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. In addition, they supply the grid with green energy, helping to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Our collaboration within the CropEnergies group is concrete proof of our commitment to sustainability, responsible production and the preservation of our environment. At Biowanze, we embody excellence in renewable ethanol and sustainable agri-food, while being firmly rooted in our mission to build a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for all.
